Fruit-classification

1. True fruit: The fruit that develops from the ovary of a flower is called a true fruit. Like- mango, jam, litchi, guava.
2. Irregular fruit: The fruit which is formed from parts other than the ovary of the flower is called Irregular fruit. For example, apple, banana, fig, jackfruit, pineapple etc.
3. Single fruit: When a single flower is formed from a single fruit, it is called a single fruit. For example – mango, jam, litchi, paddy.
4. Bunch fruit: When each ovary of a flower develops into a fruit, it is called a bunch fruit. For example – Ata, strawberry etc.
5. Compound Fruit: A fruit formed from a complete inflorescence is called a compound fruit. For example, pineapple, jackfruit, fig etc.
6. Split fruit: The skin of the fruit is dry and the skin splits to release the seeds is called split fruit. For example, peas, beans etc.
7. Indehiscent Fruits: Fruits that are juicy and the skin does not split are called indehiscent fruits. For example, mango, jam, paddy, litchi etc.
8. Capsule: A capsule is a dry cracked fruit. The fruit which, when mature, bursts from top to bottom into several compartments and the seeds are split open is called a capsule. For example, hemp, dhutura, jute, carpus etc.
9. Siliqua: Siliqua is a dry dried fruit. A fruit which, when ripe, bursts into two sepals from the bottom upwards and the seeds are split open is called siliqua. For example, mustard, radish etc.
10. Legumes: Legumes are dry fruits. The fruit which, when mature, splits into two lobes from top to bottom and the seeds are split open is called Legume. For example, peas, beans etc.
11. Lomentum: Lomentum is a dry cracked fruit. The fruit which, when mature, splits transversely into several parts and splits the seed is called lomentum. For example, Acacia, Lajjabati etc.
12. Caryopsis: Caryopsis is called caryopsis when carpel and cotyledon of a one-celled fruit are united. For example – paddy, wheat, bhutra etc.
13. Nut: Nut is a dull fruit. Its fruit is thick and hard. For example – gorjan, cashew nut, betel nut etc.
14. Drupe: Drupe is a juicy unripe fruit. The fruit forms a pod and contains only one seed. Its outer skin is thin, the middle skin is juicy and thick and the inner skin is thick. Such as coconut, mango, amra, cool etc.
15. Psyzocarp: Psyzocarp is a dry unripe fruit. For example – Coriander, Carrot, Lajjavati etc.
16. Berries: Berries are juicy unripe fruits. The rind is juicy and contains numerous seeds. For example – tomato, brinjal, banana, guava etc.
17. Hesperidium: Hesperidium is a juicy indehiscent multi-celled fruit. The rind is juicy and the inner skin forms several pods. For example, oranges, limes etc.
18. Pepo: Pepo is a juicy unripe fruit. The outer skin is juicy and fleshy and the seeds are attached to the amara. Such as cucumber, gourd, pumpkin etc.
19. Psorosis: Psorosis is a juicy compound fruit. All the flowers of the inflorescence form a single fruit. For example, pineapple, jackfruit etc.
20. Clustered fruit: When a cluster of fruits is produced from the free ovary of a single flower, it is called clustered fruit. For example, results.
21. Cypsella: A one-celled fruit containing only one seed. Its fruit and seed coat are separate. For example- marigold, sunflower etc.
22. Pom: The fruit is juicy and multi-chambered. Fruit outer skin, mid skin and inflorescence are used as food. For example, apple, pear etc.
23. Parthenocarpic Fruit: A seedless fruit produced without fertilization is called parthenocarpic fruit. For example, bananas, grapes.
