Classification of virus according to host

1. Plant virus or phytoviruses: Virus that live in plant bodies are called plant virus. For example- TMV, CMV, BYV (Bean Yellow Virus).
2. Animal Virus or Zoo-phages: Virus that live in animal bodies are called animal virus. For example, vaccinia, HIV, novel corona virus etc.
3. Bacteriophages: Viruses that reside in the body of bacteria and multiply by destroying bacterial cells are called bacteriophages. Like- T2, T4, T6, T8 etc.
4. Cyanophages: Virus that attack cyanobacteria are called cyanophages. In 1963 Safferman and Morris discovered cyanophages. Eg Microphages, LPP1, LPP2 (L=Lyngbya, P=Plectonema, P=Phormidium), AS-1, N-1 etc.
5. Microphages: Virus that attack fungi are called microphages. For example – PsV-S (Penicillium).

Classification of Virus by Nucleic Acid

1. DNA Virus: Virus whose nucleic acid core is made up of DNA are called DNA virus. Virus DNA can be single-stranded or double-stranded.
Single-stranded DNA virus: ϕX174 and M13 coliphage virus of the family Parvoviridae.
Double-stranded DNA virus: vaccinia, variola, adenoherpes simplex, T2, TIV (Tipula Iridescent Virus) etc.
2. RNA Virus: Virus whose nucleic acid core is made up of RNA are called RNA virus. Viral RNA can be single-stranded or double-stranded.
Single-stranded RNA virus: Dengue, polio, mumps, TMV, HIV and rabies virus.
Double-stranded RNA virus: Virus of the family Reoviridae. Rio virus, rice dwarf virus, retro virus etc.
