Causes of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)

DMD is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene on the human X chromosome. Dystrophin protein is not produced when the dystrophin gene is mutated. In the absence of this protein, the muscles do not become strong. As a result, the patient becomes disabled due to muscle weakness.
