Intestinal juice or succus intericus
The juice secreted from the small intestine or intestinal glands is called intestinal juice. This is called saccus intericus. It is alkaline in nature. Its pH value is 6.5-7.5.
Intestinal gland
The single-celled glands located in the mucosa layer of the intestinal wall are called enteric glands or small intestinal glands. The glands of the small intestine are – Brush cells, goblet cells, Libercun’s glands, Paneth cells, Argentefint cells and Bræner’s glands.
Gastrointestinal disorders
All the diseases that occur when the digestive system does not work properly are called digestive diseases.
1. Crohn’s disease: Chronic diarrhea occurs. Bloody stools.
2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Abdominal pain. Diarrhea occurs. Constipation is hard.
3. Celiac Disease: Chronic diarrhea occurs. Constipation is hard.
4. Gallstones: Pain under the ribs. Vomiting occurs.
5. Ulcerative Colitis: Chronic diarrhea occurs. Stomach ache.
6. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease: inflammation of the esophagus.
Why the stomach does not digest itself
(i) Inactive Enzymes: Protease enzymes secreted from the stomach are inactive. The inactive enzyme never participates in the reaction. So stomach enzymes can do no harm.
(ii) Mucous membrane: Stomach is covered by mucous membrane. Because of this, the enzyme cannot come in contact with the stomach wall. So the stomach is not damaged.
(iii) Anti-enzymes: Anti-enzymes are secreted from cells. Anti-enzymes block the action of various enzymes. So there is no damage to the stomach wall.
(iv) HCl : HCl secreted from the stomach converts the food into semi-solid liquid. Kills stomach bacteria. Absorbs harmful toxins or poisons. Acts as the main lining of the stomach. Converts gastric juice to pepsin and renin.
(v) Peristalsis Movement: The three-layered wall of the stomach increases circulation during digestion. Enzymes mix with food. Food moves inside it by the process of peristalsis. So the stomach wall is not damaged.
(vi) Tight junctions: Epithelial cells of the stomach are tightly packed. Hence HCl and digestive enzymes can do no harm to the stomach.
(vii) Cell replacement: Epithelial cells of the stomach die after 3-6 days. It is then replaced by new cells. It ensures the protection of the stomach.
(viii) Bicarbonate secretion: Bicarbonate is secreted from gastric mucosa. Bicarbonate solution neutralizes HCl.
From the above discussion, it can be said that the stomach digests various types of food, but does not digest itself.
Function or importance of gastric juice
(i) Gastric juice contains HCl. It creates an acidic environment in the stomach, destroys bacteria and converts inactive enzymes into active enzymes.
(ii) Pepsin enzyme in gastric juice converts protein into peptone.
(iii) Renin enzyme in gastric juice converts milk casein to paracasein.
(iv) Gastric juice contains intrinsic factor. It absorbs vitamin B12.
(v) The gastric juice mucosa protects the stomach wall. So the stomach does not digest itself.
(vi) Toxic substances, heavy metals, alkaloids etc. are excreted from the body with gastric juice.
Components of gastric juice
(i) Water: Gastric juice contains 99.45% water.
(ii) Organic components: Gastric juice contains pepsin, renin, lipase, mucin, intrinsic factor etc.
(iii) Inorganic components: Gastric juice contains sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, calcium phosphate, magnesium phosphate etc.
Three stages of gastric juice secretion
1. Cephalic stage: This stage begins before the food enters the stomach. At this stage, 20 percent of gastric juice is secreted.
2. Gastric phase: The gastric phase is the time when food settles in the stomach. At this stage, 70 percent of gastric juice is secreted for digestion.
3. Intestinal Phase: When food enters the small intestine from the stomach, the intestinal phase begins. At this stage very little amount of gastric juice is secreted.
What is Gastric juice
The juice secreted from G-cells, peptic cells, goblet cells, parietal cells, mucous cells etc. of stomach is called gastric juice. Deficiency of vitamin E12 in gastric juice is called pernicious anemia.
